CORE serves families-in-need that have either been referred via churches and Social Services Agencies, or whom have contacted CORE directly. In either case, the need will be verified by a home visit. These families-in-need are often trying to re-start their lives. Examples include: victims of house fires and other disasters that are referred by the Red Cross, domestic abuse victims starting a new home, AMHA clients, working families that are near the poverty line, refugees from other countries referred by the International Institute of Akron, homeless families, felons re-entering society, evictions, recovering drug offenders, and unplanned pregnancy situations.
Transforming a House into a Home
Furniture transforms an apartment or a house into an environment that a family can call a “home”. The home is the hub of activity for a family. It is their retreat.
CORE's mission is to seek donations of used furniture, and re-donate it to Families-in-Need, in Summit County, whose furniture requirements have been verified through a Home Visit performed by a Social Services Agency or a CORE Home Visit Team member.
Led and Operated By Volunteers
In operation since 1998 and using volunteers that contribute more than 23,000 hours of effort every year, CORE Furniture Bank serves families-in-need by seeking furniture donations of more than 6,500 major furniture items from more than 1,000 donors per year, transporting these furniture items to CORE’s warehouse, and then hosting approximately 1,000 families-in-need annually to fulfill their furniture needs. These major furniture items include mattresses, beds, dressers, sofas, upholstered chairs, end tables/coffee tables, lamps, TVs and dinette sets.
